Hawai’i 5-O

Where to start!?

We arrived at Honolulu in the wee hours. And being up late the night before with Syd, P Chop, the night before… I will admit to missing some of the arrival! (Ok all of it)

(Note my slightly hung over look in the cover pic!)

We were docked beside the iconic Aloha tower, which is good, because over the past 30 years, the downtown core has changed, with building rising from three- five stories to sky scrapers, making the tower hard to see from anywhere but Pier 11!

The Aloha tower

We headed ashore, and were greeted with a lei in tradition Hawaiian fashion.

Welcome ashore, Aloha!

We had signed up for the Scenic Pali Bus tour, a shorter tour, which took us around the southern part of Oahu Island.

What a beautiful tour it was!

Hilton Hawaiian village
The Sheraton (one of the first Hotels built.. according to our guide)
Waikiki beach
Had to get a picture of the lighthouse, for Shelley Anne!
The views
The Queens chair
Approaching the Blowhole
Blowhole
Impressive beaches
Windy Pali
Resulting in bad hair day!
The Asian, and Japanese influences were everywhere!

The tour guide was full of interesting facts… some true… some… maybe not…

The tour map

We were back aboard around 1pm, and were able to have lunch, a swim, and a nap, before the evening activities!

Mini picture of the day!

We headed out on the Aft lido Pool deck to watch as the ship left port, and enjoyed the lights of the “big city”

Ahola Honolulu!

Although we had a beautiful day, touring and enjoying the sights. One thing, that we did not take pictures of (like most tourists) or post, was the homelessness.

The city of Honolulu is beautiful, and filled with expensive shops (Louis Vuitton, Gucci, Tiffany’s etc) and the homes are expansive and impressive. With the price tags to match.

Nothing less than a Million!

It was hard to see the many residents who are living in tent cities, in parks, and basically anywhere they can. Although, some might “choose” to live this way, there are many who don’t.

It reminded us how bad the housing crisis is. In Canada and the US, especially in places where the “tourists” are driving up the prices.

The tour guide did tell us of the programs for native Hawaiian’s to have affordable housing. (Or land anyway, to be able to build on)

One response to “Hawai’i 5-O”

  1. Your photos bring back such happy memories for me of spending holidays in Waikiki (Kuhio Beach) with my parents and grandparents. It was my Mom’s favourite place on Earth and a very different place in the 1960’s and 1970’s than it is now. Glen and I were there last year and noted the unhoused issues. Keep your vacation album memories coming. Living vicariously and loving every post!
