The Islands of Samoa

After 7 days at sea (again) it was good to see land (again).

We rose to watch the docking. The port in Apia is not large, and there is a narrow passage between the coral. The captain spun the ship on a dime in the harbour and parallel parked. Impressive.

The tug

Our cabin was on the harbour side, not the pier side. So we did miss seeing the greeting, but a friend of ours did get a video.

The Samoan greeting

We took our time in the morning to let those who had excursions get off first, and then we wandered to the gangway, and stepped onto the Sunny Samoa shores.

Boy was it hot!

We strolled along the seaside, and enjoyed the sights. stopping regularly, when there was shade to rest,

Coming ashore
The port
The carving along the port exit
The flag
The city of Apia
The harbour
The busses were a bit Bohemian
The beautiful flora

Our destination was the impressive Cathedral. Words fail to describe the beauty of this church.

The Cathedral
The dome

(Funny story, the cardinal who built it ran out of money half way through… apparently not all the locals are that impressed with it)

The inside

We then crossed the street to the Samoa cultural Village, and looked around. There was a gathering with mic’s and many people and security, Rick asked a local policeman who was looking a bit bored what was going on, and found out that a UN diplomat had just arrived, and they were having a Kava Ceremony to welcome them. (We did not join)

And the fauna

We made our way back to the ship, and hopped into the pool to cool off.

And a wee painting of the harbour
The view from the pool deck

Then of course a wee nap.

We woke as the ship was leaving port, and I admired the islands as we sailed away.

The islands as we left

That evening, we enjoyed a quiet dinner in the dinning room, some music and early to bed

We just love the ceiling here
