The not so wet lands

Well, if you travel in Queensland, at the beginning of the rainy season… ie, cab driver tells you… it has not rained for two months. But it has rained every day for an hour or two since you got to Queensland…it’s really dry!

So, we packed up at Mission beach, and our German neighbour’s Janine (pronounced yah-neen) and Christian off loaded all their extras:

  • Air mattress and pump
  • Battery candle
  • Bin and liners (that’s garbage can and bags for our North American friends)
  • Washing power (that’s Laundry detergent for N.A. peeps)
  • Two bags of Crisps (that chips for the N.A. People)
  • Dish soap
  • Butter and dish
  • Cheese
  • Oil and vinegar
  • Lysol wipes, and spray
  • Salt and pepper
  • Seasoning
  • A yoga mat
  • Beach umbrella
  • 4 bottles of cider
  • A bottle of Wine!
  • And a bunch of other little things!

It was a bonanza!

They also had a proper coffee machine. And made us a real cuppa.. and Rick’s was a Cappa! the Barista (Christian) did try to make a froth deco…)

Richard’s cappuccino

We then hit the road, our first stop was to get some fuel… of course, nothing is easy when we travel. We were sure there was a gas station in Mission beach… but nope…

That’s ok, when we turned off the A1, to drive into Mission beach we passed a “petrol station”

Nope… we did not notice it was actually closed when we turned yesterday!

So down the A1 we headed, we knew we would get to one before we ran out of diesel. And we did! Whew!

Our first destination for the day was Cardwell Spa pools.

At least they warn us not to swim in the sludge.

It was a good adventure! The road was “interesting”. Washboard or corduroy!

Road to the “spa”

We did not regret the adventure… and if it were later in the season. I’m sure it would have been spectacular!

The road less traveled.

Next stop was Hinchinbrook lookout. Wow… it was an incredible view. Then a wee walk over to Panjoo Lookout. Overlooking the Hinchinbrook National Park Island.

The pictures just don’t do it justice… impressive views. We sat and enjoyed the sea breeze and view for a bit.

We returned and the Van temp was 35c. In the shade!!! It was a hot day.

Down the road we continued. Next and final stop for the day was TYTO wetlands in Ingham.

The map… note it does not tell you where you are!

It took us a bit to orient ourselves. And we finally found a shady place to park and make lunch.

Then off to wander the “wetlands”

As stated above… not so wet. But still impressive.

LOVE LOVE LOVE the lotus flowers!!! (I need to get some for my home pond!!)

Lotus flowers.
More Lotus

Notice how they Stand tall… the water should be actually up to the leaves.

But honestly… it was a good thing… as these guys were not there

Did not see any. 😅
The pond was covered with red floating “duck weed” like
Love the sky and red in the pond!
My mini version.
The wee pond in the park… with a raised walkway
As we crossed the bridge back, the turtles all came swimming over… they expected food.

Again, the experience was not 100% as advertised and expected, but we really enjoy it anyway. Sometimes you just need to be zen, and enjoy the ride. And we did.

We hit the road again, very hot from our adventures and looking forward to our caravan park’s pool!

As we drove along, we saw what appeared to be fires in the distance… reminding us of our drive through Yellowstone a few years ago.

The smoke in the distance.

We arrived safe and sound at the Townsville Tourist and Lifestyle Village. With a lovely spot beside the amenities, the pool and the WIFI!

Our little heaven for the evening.

Drinks poured, pool dipped, and blog/Facebook done.

Until tomorrow’s adventure…
