In Darwin’s footsteps…

Today we explored the heights of Hobart.

Mount Wellington and Nelson’s Lookout.

We packed a picnic lunch and headed out on our wander.

But first… bat duck needed his picture taken!

The drive itself was awesome

Mount Wellington in the distance
The Road Narrowed as we ascended
Lookout half way up.
The view from the Old Springs Hotel site. The hotel burnt down in a forest fire.

When you look at the above picture, Look at the Organ Pipes. Note how sheer they are … also, look at the Tower at the top, it looks small in that picture.

You can hike to the bottom of the Organ Pipes… only a four hour hike…

We did not…

We continued the drive up.

The drive

Once we arrived at the top, we had to drive around the peak to get to the parking.

Amazing views of the harbour

Once at the peak we got out of the car. 9 degrees!!!! We needed to get our jackets on!

The temperature difference from the bottom to the top.

But the views!

Hobart below

A fellow sightseer took our picture. I think she may have been a pro… she took about 10!

How awesome is this picture?

Then I climbed to the very top.

At the peak
360 from the peak!
Selfie… the wind was something too!
The det’s

We then drove down! The drive down was as scary as the drive up, and more traffic!

Fun fact, Darwin tried to climb to the top of Mount Wellington… but up over the Pipes… it was not until he engaged a native guide that he made it up… the back side is a much more gentle climb!

We then headed to Nelson Lookout, a much shorter hill, but more significant to the history of the region.

The history
The stations
The Mast
Some of the flags
The records
The view from inside, originally there was a telescope to see the other signals The other signal hill was directly in the Center of this picture, half hidden by the window frame.
Originally, they used smoke signals before the masts. But think this was to keep the signal man warm… it was chilly up there.
The view from outside (from our lunch bench)

We had a lovely lunch enjoying the views and picking out where we would go tomorrow.

With only a week to go… we did some seasonal shopping

Bat Duck approved.
