Rottnest

Yesterday we visited Rottnest Island. A very interesting island off the west coast of Australia, and home to a unique macropod, the Quokka. (That’s a marsupial with large feet)

Quokka’s are about the size of a cat, and although are generally nocturnal, they are very bold on Rottnest (or Rotto as locals call it)

There is a trend, Quokka selfies, as the Quokka looks like it is smiling, and they look very cute, and they will come right up to you (looking for food) so, selfie it is.

The approach.

We were sitting having a break, around 11:30 and these two wandered over,

As usual, I’m ahead of myself.

We headed out early, as our ferry was at 8:30 am, and we are staying at a BnB about 45 minute drive from the Center of Perth.

We chose to take the 1 1/2 hour ferry from downtown Perth, as opposed to the 1/2 hour ferry from Fremantle, as that way we also got a Swan River cruise.

Our Ferry, the Maggie Cat

We did a short exploration of the wharf, and will be back today, after church for more exploration.

We arrived at Rottnest, along with hundreds of others at 10, so fought the crowds and made it up to the Bus/train ticket stall.

The “whale”

It was so crowded, so we first made our way to…. Yup… the church!

It was a lovely little building with rich history.

The outside
The inside
The info.. and history.

Then over to the RC church, a more splendorous building, but to be fair, much newer, and with less history.

Loved the shell for the holy water

Then I made sure to dip my toes in the Indian Ocean!

Toes dipped!

We then headed over to the train!

Our train, at the start
Choo choo… off we go!
The train station, mocked up…
At the end of the trip.

The train took us up to Oliver Hill, an old WW2 Gun installation on the island

We then returned, and were going to take the hop on hop off bus, but due to an “incident” the service was suspended, so we headed to the beach to get a tasty adult bevie and have lunch. That’s when the Quokkas joined us.

We then headed out for the bus ride… it was packed as the suspension in the service increased the number of people trying to get around.

We only hopped off once.. at the west end of the island.

Lovely views…

A tiny painting had to be done. it was hard the wind was crazy!

The tiny pic

Then I headed over to the other side, to “cathedral rocks”

I stayed on the path!

Staying on path
saw this little fella
The rocks
The other rocks
The seal, or sea lion.. not sure which

We then headed back… and made our way to the ferry, then back to our car… and then back out to our BnB… in bed! Exhausted from a great day!

Bat duck enjoying the views of Perth on the way back!
