Still no Penguins.

We went to Penguin Island today, the challenge is, like much of the wildlife here (and in Canada to be honest) they prefer the evening.

The Penguins hunt during the day, and sleep at night, which is when they come ashore. And, well, we don’t travel at night.. so we have yet to see most any wildlife in the wild. (Exception our evening at Mon Repos!)

Not seeing penguins did not make for a bad day. It was still amazing.

We headed out in the morning down to Rockingham, a community about 40 minutes south of Perth to get to Penguin Island.

The Center.

We managed to get the last parking spot in the lot, and got our tickets for the ferry, with 10 minutes to spare. (Good timing)

And off we went.

The info.

Although there is a sandbar from the Mainland to the island, that is “in theory” walkable, it is not safe to do so, given the tides and shifting sands. We did over hear someone tell how they used to do that when they were kids, “bring a Barbie” and spend the day.

Our boat, the Penguin.

The ride was short, 5 minutes, and we arrived

The shore from the Ferry landing
Apparently it’s a Canadian’s fault the locals used to come here!
The birds we could see. and I think we saw them all
Except this one… 😦

We wandered the boardwalk.

Pelicans nesting on the hill top
One pelican flying away

We then ended up on the other side of island, and down along the beach

The beach… lots of Kelp, and waves, no swimming here
Those caves they used to “hang out” in
The north side of the western beach
The South end of the western beach

Unfortunately at the other end of the beach was a long set of stairs! Up we went.

The view at the top was worth the climb

The beach we walked: and the board walk
Looking back to the mainland.
If you look closely on the bottom right, you can see Rick, in the bushes looking down the beach

We then returned to the grassy area where we started to have some lunch and relax

The views
My. Mini of the day. On the eastern beach

While I painted, Rick lay down in the shade to rest, but was awakened by something poking at his ear/beard…

This little guy
He really likes Rick

More relaxing and watching the Skinks.. and painting until it was time to catch the ferry back.

My attempt to capture the view..
