We went to Penguin Island today, the challenge is, like much of the wildlife here (and in Canada to be honest) they prefer the evening.
The Penguins hunt during the day, and sleep at night, which is when they come ashore. And, well, we don’t travel at night.. so we have yet to see most any wildlife in the wild. (Exception our evening at Mon Repos!)
Not seeing penguins did not make for a bad day. It was still amazing.
We headed out in the morning down to Rockingham, a community about 40 minutes south of Perth to get to Penguin Island.

We managed to get the last parking spot in the lot, and got our tickets for the ferry, with 10 minutes to spare. (Good timing)
And off we went.

Although there is a sandbar from the Mainland to the island, that is “in theory” walkable, it is not safe to do so, given the tides and shifting sands. We did over hear someone tell how they used to do that when they were kids, “bring a Barbie” and spend the day.

The ride was short, 5 minutes, and we arrived

We wandered the boardwalk.

We then ended up on the other side of island, and down along the beach

Unfortunately at the other end of the beach was a long set of stairs! Up we went.
The view at the top was worth the climb

We then returned to the grassy area where we started to have some lunch and relax

While I painted, Rick lay down in the shade to rest, but was awakened by something poking at his ear/beard…

More relaxing and watching the Skinks.. and painting until it was time to catch the ferry back.
