The Nation’s Capital

Today we went to visit the Australian Parliament Buildings. The government is not in session today, so we did get to see a lot, and the place was fairly quiet. They return tomorrow so there were a number of “minions” scurrying about getting ready.

Again, we sing the praises of the public transit. Our Airbnb is on the LRT line, that goes to the CBD, then we caught a bus to Capital Hill.

Canberra is a planned city. When they decided to make it the capital it was a small village so the city has an interesting design.

The Capital Hill is a large circle, with the Parliament in the Centre surrounded by parks and boulevards. North (not quite due north) across a Lake is another smaller slightly smaller Circle, which is the Center of the CBD… then further north, along the boulevard is another circle, which is where we are staying, and then the suburbs beyond… (then there is the urban sprawl beyond that )

It makes for an easy to navigate city.

Unfortunately, I would say the CBD is somewhat depressed, and what was once lovely buildings appear to have seen better days. (No “I love the architecture” pictures taken)

The Parliament on the other hand was, in my option, stunning. A very modern looking building on the outside, and given that it was finished in 1988, not surprising.

The old Parliament looks more traditional

The old Parliament from the new…
The new from the same spot, looking the other direction

As we approached, we were impressed by the water feature , and entry… note the lack of people!!

So we took a selfie!

The entrance also had a number of features

The crest, with the flag behind.

We entered and again, after passing security, were pleased at how much we could explore.

View from the roof

After dinner we headed up to our rooftop to watch the sun set.

Good night Canberra! (note the star in top right… yup. We are south!)
